Motley Crue's "The Dirt" Movie Coming to Netflix (Trailer)

When the Motley Crue biography The Dirt: Confessions of The World's Most Notorious Rock Band was released in 2001, it was widely thought to be unfilmable.  According to Rolling Stone, the book "contains some of the grittiest, raunchiest, supposedly true stories recorded, with scenes depicting the abuse of drugs, alcohol and groupies as the “Shout at the Devil” rockers somehow survived the Eighties and a low commercial period in the Nineties." Who could capture all of that debauchery on celluloid and not get an X rating?

Well, ladies and gentlemen, The Dirt will have its unflinching debut on the ratings-free Netflix March 22 and it will definitely be a "must see" for any rock fan. If the trailer is any indication, this will be a wild ride.

After all, how could it not be? Anyone who was there in the 80's, or who at least knows a little about the L.A. music scene in the 80's, knows that Motley Crue were pretty much the poster children for rock n roll excess. Their cross-dressing glam rock metal was infused with testosterone, sex, lots of hair and mascara, cocaine, sex, whiskey, sex, heroin, sex, celebrity marriages, leopard print pants, incarceration (not for the pants, but that definitely was a crime), very public divorce, and near the end, a vicious car wreck which cost the life of one of Vince Neal's close friends and a charge of vehicular manslaughter.

But in the beginning, it was brilliant. Definitely more talented than your average L.A. glam metal band, Motley Crue scored a ton of hits, sold millions of records, and played their asses off in concert. I mean, face shredding, loud, balls-to-the-wall, glorious, metal arena rock (I still maintain that most of the credit for live performance goes to drummer Tommy Lee who was nothing short of a freaking freight train behind the kit). But anyway....

The Dirt Movie

The Dirt debuts on Netflix March 22. The cast includes rapper Machine Gun Kelly as Tommy Lee, Douglas Booth as Nikki Six, Game Of Thrones' Iwan Rheon as Mick Mars, and Daniel Webber as Vince Neil. Cool cast definitely, but you probably won't recognize them behind the makeup and wigs.

As a bonus, Vince Neil confirmed that the band got back together to record four(!) new songs for the movie soundtrack. Basist Nikki Six assures everyone that the new tracks are def up to snuff, saying, "I'm listening to the roughs of the new Motley Crue and feels real and raw. Everybody is playing like mad and the songs crush. Plus we have a surprise that will confirm we're outta our minds."

Production actually began on The Dirt in 2003, but as these things go, it had a hard time moving into full production until the hype around Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody began in the winter of 2018. Netflix stepped in with full backing, a cast was assembled, a new director attached, and full production ensued. Tommy Lee was adamant throughout the production that the movie would stay true to the group's wild story and would not be toned down to avoid offending movie viewers. Here's hoping that's true.
