RIP MICK RALPHS
We are saddened to report that legendary guitarist, Mick Ralphs, has passed away at the age of 81. Although his official cause of death is unknown at the time of this writing, he was battling ill health for the last decade.
Known for his legendary guitar work, Mick was also a songwriter and co-founder of 2 bands that helped define the genre we now refer to as classic rock: Bad Company and Mott the Hoople.
While he may not be a household name like some of the other guitarists lumped into the classic rock genre, Mick Ralphs was a co-writer on some of the most famous songs ever recorded, including "Can't Get Enough" and "Feel Like Making Love" (Bad Company) along with "Rock and Roll Queen" and "One of the Boys" (Mott the Hoople). He also helped pen "Ready for Love" which was, subsequently, recorded by both bands and became another huge hit, for Bad Company. He also co-wrote "Flying Hour" with The Beatles' George Harrison.
The timing of Mick's passing is doubly unfortunate as Bad Company are on the docket to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. Mick is survived by his life partner Susie Chavasse, his two children, three step-children and his bandmates Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke.
Upon hearing the news of his passing, Paul Rodgers wrote: “Our Mick has passed, my heart just hit the ground. He has left us with exceptional songs and memories. He was my friend, my songwriting partner, an amazing and versatile guitarist who had the greatest sense of humour. Our last conversation a few days ago we shared a laugh but it won’t be our last. There are many memories of Mick that will create laughter. Condolences to everyone who loved him especially his one true love, Susie. I will see you in heaven.”
Simon Kirke went on to add: “He was a dear friend, a wonderful songwriter, and an exceptional guitarist. We will miss him deeply.”
Part of Mott the Hoople, since the band's inception, they were considered legends for their live shows and found fans in both David Bowie and The Clash's Mick Jones. Dismayed by various limitations both within himself and other members of the band, Mick Ralphs left Mott the Hoople and founded Bad Company in 1973 and rode the wave of meteoric success with that band, staying with them through their disbanding in 1982 and subsequent reunions and various incarnations. Mick suffered a stroke in 2016 which left him bedridden until his death this week.
A true legend that is and will be missed for many years to come. Thank you for your contributions to defining modern rock and roll. RIP Mr. Ralphs.
