CBGB & Omfug, known among rock fans as CBGBs, is one of the most well known and respected music clubs in rock 'n roll history. Opened by Hilly Christal in 1973, who owned it until its closure in 2006, CBGB & Omfug means Country, Bluegrass, Blues and Other Music For Uplifting Gormandizers, although it became the launching pad for many of the most famous alternative rock and punk bands. Some of the artists that got their launch at CBGBs include Ramones, Television, Patti Smith Group, Blondie, and Talking Heads.
